Limited Luxury iPad Case Review – Creatively Unique

 .

The Price is Limited, the Quality is Not.

Here at WholeApple we’ve seen our fair share of iPad and iPhone cases, and the vast majority of them design wise are fairly simple, with little variation to differentiate them form one another. Thus, it’s refreshing when we see a company that’s willing to try something different, even with the risks of potentially not being widely accepted. The Limited Luxury case with stand for iPad 2 is just one case, and it’s unique style and plastic/metal hinge marrying the front to the back is a creative and visually elegant design choice.

VidReview – Logic Keyboard for Final Cut Pro & After Effects

http://www.wholeapple.com/2010/10/06/

I’m jealous. Jealous of people who only seem to have to know one app, and know it extremely well. Whether you’re an illustrator user, a Final Cut Pro user, or anyone who works on a single application almost exclusively on a daily basis, you probably know the hotkey combinations of your application like the back of your hand. Me on the other hand, knows about three jillion different apps, some of them inside and out, others only peripherally, but few of them can I honestly say that I know the majority of keyboard shortcuts for. I tend to use the menuing systems inside the applications far more than I do the hotkeys in many situations, and I do know that this slows down my workflow. This is of course, not the case with applications I use all the time like Photoshop, but what tends to happen with me is I will accidentally use hotkey combinations from other applications while inside of another.

Blackmagic Design Announces Acquisition of Teranex Systems

Terane Mini front view

Ok, I'll take one. For review of course.

A bit odd I know, two in a row on BlackMagic Designs, but I was just going to their site to see if they put up a more functional driver for the Mac for their Intensity Pro and the front page had this news. Pretty big deal for the company, wonder what it will do of the gear overall… let’s see what they say shall we?

“Teranex is a strategic acquisition for Blackmagic Design,” said Grant Petty, Blackmagic Design CEO. “Its technology, solutions and market complement our own efforts and its high quality video processing technology enables us to provide our customers with even higher levels of video quality — extending Blackmagic Design’s product range for the broadcast, feature film and high end post production markets.”

“This is an exciting milestone for our company,” said Mike Poirier, General Manager of Teranex. “We are extremely happy to be part of the Blackmagic Design team. Blackmagic Design’s global reach, leading edge technologies, widely recognized brand name, strong systems and networking expertise and worldwide customer relationships make it an ideal partner for Teranex.”

Teranex will continue to support its customers and expand its sales channels with the added strength of the Blackmagic Design organization. Teranex will also continue its long tradition of developing superlative video processing platforms based on its patented SIMD architecture.

Teranex’s claim to fme so to speak is in their part helping develop real time video processing capability for the U.S. military int he 1980′s, which if you were around back then tech-wise like I was, you’d know never happened. At least for us civilian peons. What they did for the military I am sure helped to push things forward throughout the industry though, and the marriage of the two companies seems like a good decision. Time will tell what it means for us lowly “useless eaters” as some military spec-ops folks might call us.

We’re not totally useless guys. Ok, empty your clip into that guy over there. He created Barney the Dinosaur.

Full press release after the jump.

Opinions Wanted – BlackMagic UltraStudio Pro (Mac & PC)

I had a friend who is a buyer for a small but agressive PC company ask me the other day what I thought about the products from BlackMagic Design. I found myself at a bit of a loss, as all I had ever done is used (and still own) a BlackMagic Intensity Pro, a $200 I/O card that I actually declined to finish the review of and post it here because I was more than a little disappointed with it. I even paid for it, which I try to never do if possible. Usually my expertis, coverage, and expert feedback are enough to make a vendor happy, and for the 20+ hours work I would put into something like that for a writeup, pix and video, it seems a fair trade.

Thing is, I came in on the product line as it was going through a major overhaul revolving around USB3 on the PC and Thunderbolt on the Mac. Their UltraStudio line of products looks great, so when this friend asked me for my advice I did a little digging. Right off the bat I liked the form factor of the UltraStudio Pro, which is really for PC, then there’s the UltraStudio 3D with juicy Thunderbolt goodness. So…

Best Buy Closing 50 US Stores – 500 To Go? We Hope.

Best Buy Closing 50 US Stores After $1.7B Quarterly Loss

Worst Buy is a company that preys on ignorance, delivers no value, and thinks of you as a stupid rube with money to burn. We need jobs in the USA but not these types of jobs, I hope they flame out as badly as Circuit City.

I mean, just try to buy an 8GB flash drive there, how’s $30 sound to you? Great deal? Awesome, you’re a Worst Buy wet dream. I had to buy a MacBook Pro power cable there one time (HAD TO) and it cost me $90 and an hour long wait to pick it up from the “Reserved for Quick Checkout” line. Awesome.

According to the Associated Press (AP), the performance compares to a $651 million profit the same time the year before and was an improvement over the same quarter last year.

Best Buy, which says the loss is partly due to restructuring charges, will open 100 small Best Buy Mobile outlets throughout the U.S. Best Buy says sales of TVs, digital cameras and video game consoles have declined, while sales of tablets, smartphones and e-readers have increased.

Don’t let the (flaming) door (of FAIL) hit your fat bloated ass on the way out Worst Buy. Don’t forget to take the idiots at Dork Squad with you.

Waterfield Cases – San Francisco Chic, Top Quality

This was supposed to be just about cases, but Heidi over at Waterfield had to go and make this fun. Dang her. )

Seems the bossman was at South by Southwest showing off a new bag, which we’ll review if Heidi can see hr way clear to sending the folks who took a year to post this one a review sample. Oh well, either way it’s a cute video. Review after the jump.

Galileo. Your iOS in Motion. iWant. Two.

Wow! Boy, if I invested every time I wanted to send some money to a great KickStarter project, I would not only be broke, but my wife would totally kill me too. This project is one of those that just looks fantastic, and I would definitely give them 100 bucks to get one if I could swing it. Oh hell who am I kidding. After watching the video (WATCH IT NOW! DO IT!) I am TOTALLY donating to the cause. As the Indigo Girls sing it; “Galileo’s head was on the block , his crime was lookin’ up the truth…” Well as the bombshell of this awesome tool explodes, I want to get one, it’s so smooth!

Lord that was bad, I’m sorry Indigo Girls. Sorry Galileo. Sorry.. everyone. This is just SUPER cool.

Graphics Holdings (aka Silicon Graphics) Sues Apple and… Everyone Else

SGI Hired me in 1998 to consult with them on the Visual Workstation. They basically paid me to tell them (about 20 times) they were insane to ship this the way they were planning to. They thanked me, shipped it, and the beginning of the end of SGI had arrived. Sad. They never hired me again, wonder why.

Those of you who are my age may well remember the 800 pound graphics gorilla of the early to late 90′s, SIlicon Graphics. Purveyors at the time of the only machines considered serious in the visual effects and 3D industries, SGI wound up falling into disrepair in the early 2000′s when they couldn’t figure out a way to fight off the Windows NT juggernaut and still make obscene amounts of money on hardware. The profits they made will likely never be seen again, and though I’m not complaining about them supplying my geek wardrobe for almost ten years at no charge (the benefits of being a graphics/tech journalist) they were incredibly irresponsible with their mone, and even sold their $480 million dollar headquarters in Mountain View, CA to Google in the mid-2000′s.
